Snowball was trailing behind Velvet who was trying quite hard not to pelt him in the face with snow as he sang discordantly. “All the way south~ there’s a road~ KEEPS ON CALLING MEEEE *HUMPF-*” Snowballs lovely off key serenade was cut short by velvet losing his patience and pushing his head into the snow.
“Can you quit that racket snowball!! I’m trying to come up. With a plan!!!” Velvet snapped and stomped his feet with a grimace. “I can’t focus if you keep singing and it’s not helping! All we’ve got so far is throwing snowballs at the damned thing!” Velvet began to rant in frustration.
“I’ve been actually trying to come up with a solution to our problem! You’ve just been- pissing around!” He hissed out
Snowball frowned and spoke “well maybe if you loosened up you’d be able to think easier! And don’t you think that yelling may not be the best idea??”
“Well when I’ve got wannabe Freddy Mercury here it’s a little too late! I’m sure if Brincle was anywhere near here he would’ve FROZEN you to stop all that racket!” Velvet shouted in return stomping his paws angrily. He didn’t notice how the color drained from snowballs face or how he began to back away..
“What? Nothing left to say now? Cmon snowball! Dazzle me…with…one of…why are you-“ velvet turned to see brincle. The monster chow looming over him and he let out a shrill scream as crows flew overhead and he turned heel and began to run
“SNOWBALL RUN! RUN!” Velvet screamed as he banged into the side of the other chow to encourage him to get moving
Snowball of course. Like any sensible chow began to high tail it towards the wood line and shouted over his shoulder “Velvet!!! This way!!! He’d get slowed down by the trees!”
Velvet followed veering off towards the right to follow suit. He hopped over a fell tree and slid beneath some branches struggling to catch his footing as he tried to keep up with a suprisingly nimble snowball.
Behind them brincle. Its fur glistening in the caught sun and reflecting off the ice tore through the trees to chase after the pair. It’s large claws pounding into the snow and ice slicing through it without breaking stride as it released a low rattling drawl. Billows of ice cold fog came from its glistening maw. It flowed over the ground and the soft surface of snow. Icing it over in a thin coating of strong frozen water.
“Oh gods. Velvet move faster it’s freezing the ground!!! It’s trying to- slip us up? I don’t know! Just please!” Snowball pleaded as he glanced around trying to find denser tree cover as he panicked
Velvet wheezed and panted his paws struggling to gain traction on the ice. He hopped onto a fallen log jumping off to try to gain some distance between him and Brincle. However the log shifted and began to roll. Right into brincles legs.
Brincle with a log underfoot let out a sharp snarl and fell forewards its powerful paws caving under its hefty body tripping over the log and skidding on the ice.
“Velvet! This way!” Snowball dashed into thicker tree cover soon coming to panting and wheezing stop as velvet soon appeared next to him whimpering softly as he laid flat against the snow.
“That was good thinking velvet!!! We got away!!”
“It wasn’t on purpose snowball…I just- panicked and I wanted more distance…I was so scared…” velvet trembled his eyes pricking with tears as he sat up and trembled.
Snowballs face fell a bit and his eyes softened. “Hey hey it’s okay…. Don’t worry about it! You did it! You saved us both velvet…you don’t gotta be afraid anymore-“
Velvet cut him off and grimaced “I don’t know about that snowball. We’ve only just barely got away and then what…? Now what do we do? We can’t keep running forever and I’m sure nobody else will be willing to help us… we are just two small chows with… nothing to help us really. I don’t know what to do snowball. I’m scared. I’m cold. And I’m really hungry right now” he murmured as he looked down to the snow
Snowball seemed to pause and think. He sat down next to velvet and put a paw on his back. “Listen. Let’s… take everything one step at a time okay…? We are pretty smart if I say so myself so I think we can figure something out yeah? How about..first things first. We walk farther to get some more distance from Brincle and then we can think about our lunch break. Then we can actually buckle down and think about what exactly we are gonna do about mister white Christmas over there. How does that sound velvet?” He spoke with a soft smile tilting his head at him with a warm smile.
Velvet softly stood up and nodded as he began to trot in stride with snowball wiping the tears from his eyes. “Yeah…yeah that sounds nice…thanks velvet…sorry for…calling you wannabe Freddy Mercury…” he murmured softly and looked down as he stepped through the frozen brush
“Eh you’re fine…that song was nowhere near Freddy Mercury though I’m more insulted by your lack of musical knowledge then the comparison” snowball teased with a soft smile as he bumped into velvets side purposely.
“Oh hush- you know damn well- that it’s not my forte anyways. I’m more partial to Christmas music thank you very much” he swaggled his head as he spoke smiling back at snowball and bumping him in return.
“The fact that you listen to Christmas music year round is the most scary thing about you to me velvet I hope you know that” snowball chided lightly as he looked over his shoulder at velvet. “Maybe if we blast Mariah Carrie he’d actually go back into hibernation and freeze up”
Velvet laughed and raised a paw. “No no she sings when she thaws snowball”
